Greenmarket Collections Reach 1,000,000 lbs!

Congratulations to GrowNYC, our partner in greenmarket collections, for the accomplishment of diverting 1 Million lbs of textiles from landfills. GrowNYC has been a great partner in so many ways that it is hard to say enough about how we feel about this organization. They have helped us as a company and also as individuals raising the bar in how we interact with our local community. We tip our caps to you GrowNYC. Here’s to 1 million more!

From their recent news release:
“Given the enormous volume of textiles that residents dispose of each year in NYC, GrowNYC wanted to provide a convenient alternative. What began as a pilot in Union Square has grown to be a permanent offering at eight of our Greenmarkets,” said GrowNYC Executive Director Marcel Van Ooyen. “And, New Yorkers have responded overwhelmingly, as over 51,000 New Yorkers have contributed to the million pounds of textiles that have been diverted from disposal as of March 31, 2011. That’s enough to fill 24 subway cars!”

Back To School – Clothing Drives are Cool

We know that children have mixed emotions towards the beginning of the school year. Another thing we know is how much kiddies enjoy participating in a clothing drive. Clothing drives are not only a great educational tool to explain the need to recycle clothes, they are also a way for your PTA to raise some well needed funds. Throughout the 2009-2010 school year we hosted dozens of drives throughout the Tri-State area and were able to help schools raise thousands of dollars. There is no school too big or too small. Volunteer to help clean up the starting line of the ING New York City Marathon

Have you ever dreamed about participating in the ING New York City Marathon but never got around to that little thing we call training? Well, so have we and here is our chance to be involved in all the energy and excitement of the starting line while providing a well needed service to the runners. A little background here: The Race is held on Novemeber 1st. The weather in New York this time of the year can be tricky to forecast to say the least. On top of this, most of the runners show up as early as 5 am to take in some of the action and jostle for a good starting position. When race time comes, the temperature can warm up and many runners just chuck their outer wear on the grassy fields of Fort Wadsworth. This is where you and Wearable Collections come in. We have partnered up with the New York Road Runners to try and assure that none of this discarded clothing heads towards the landfills. We are looking for as many volunteers as possible to help us take on this gargantuan task. The day will surely be fun and exciting, but there will also be a lot of work involved. Volunteers are expected to arrive around 5am and wont leave till 3:30 pm. So if you think you are up to a Marathon of a day yourself and would like to volunteer, please fill out this form. Take it or Leave it with Moishe’s Moving

We are super happy to announce our partnership with NYC’s leading movers Moishe’s. We all know how un-eco friendly moving can make you feel. We know your pain and are trying to do something about it. Moishe’s, in partnership with Wearable Collections, is allowing all of their customers to Take it or Leave it (sorry, only clothing). When you move with Moishe’s, you can designate which clothing you no longer want and they will take it away for you. Moishe’s Moving will then store the items until collected by Wearable Collections who will bring the clothing to be recycled. Not only does this program alleviate a great stress to the person moving, we will also be dedicating the proceeds of these collections to a soon to be announced charity of Moishe’s choosing. Moishe’s Moving has been leading the pact with their go green initiatives and Wearable Collections is honored to be included in their program.
